A thoughtful guide to Antiochian Orthodox dating

“Antiochian Orthodox” in North America generally describes a parish or member of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese. Its communities include people with Arab and Middle Eastern heritage, converts and families of many backgrounds. The jurisdictional label should never be treated as an ethnic guess.

A shared jurisdiction can make some conversations easier, but it does not establish character, compatibility or identical practice. Learn the person before treating the label as an answer.

The archdiocese grew out of Syrian and Lebanese emigration at the turn of the twentieth century, and its founding figure is Saint Raphael Hawaweeny, consecrated in Brooklyn in 1904 as the first Orthodox bishop consecrated on American soil. The second turning point was 1987, when roughly two thousand people from the Evangelical Orthodox Church were received into the archdiocese — a single event that reshaped the whole jurisdiction. That is why an Antiochian parish today may be a century-old Levantine community, a congregation of former Evangelicals, a Western Rite parish, or all three in one building. Its chancery is in Englewood, New Jersey, and its camp and conference centre at Antiochian Village in Bolivar, Pennsylvania.

Antiochian parishes in North America celebrate the Nativity on 25 December along with the rest of the civil year, and calculate Pascha on the older reckoning shared by every Orthodox church. In practice this puts an Antiochian household on the same December rhythm as its non-Orthodox neighbours while Easter drifts, which is one less negotiation if you are dating outside Orthodoxy and one more if your partner keeps the Julian calendar.

This is the most consistently English-language of the historically immigrant jurisdictions, and for many enquirers that is the practical reason they end up here. Arabic survives in particular hymns, in the greeting on a feast day and in the older half of long-established parishes, but a newcomer can usually follow an entire Liturgy without a translation. If a partner grew up in an Arabic-speaking home, the language question is about their parents and grandparents rather than about the service.

An Antiochian parish may use English, Arabic or both, and local culture can vary widely between a historic immigrant community and a newer mission. Ask about the actual parish rather than relying on a general impression of Antiochian worship or convert life.

Some households hold Arabic language, food, hospitality and Middle Eastern family connections close; others do not. Political history and relatives abroad may also be personal and sensitive. Let the person decide what belongs in early conversation and avoid asking them to represent an entire region.

Preparation runs through the parish priest and then the diocesan bishop, and the service itself is the betrothal and crowning common to all the Orthodox churches. The archdiocese permits marriage between an Orthodox Christian and a baptised Christian of another confession where the bishop blesses it and the children will be raised Orthodox; it does not celebrate a sacramental marriage with someone unbaptised. Where one partner is a recent convert or catechumen, the priest will usually want the reception into the church settled before a wedding date is set.

Requirements vary by diocese and by circumstance even inside one jurisdiction, so the priest who would prepare you is the only reliable source. Ask him early: it changes timing far more often than it changes the answer.

When an Antiochian Christian dates across jurisdictions, compare the two lived parish experiences rather than debating which style feels more authentically Orthodox. Hospitality, chanting and local customs can enrich a relationship when neither person uses them to rank the other.

When marriage becomes realistic, contact the priest who would guide preparation. Pastoral and documentary requirements can vary by jurisdiction and personal circumstance, even when both people are Orthodox.
