1. Who we are
Orthodate (“Orthodate”, “we”, “us”) operates the Orthodate dating service. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with and what rights you have. For the purposes of the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation, Orthodate is the data controller for the data described here.
2. Data we collect
- Account data: email address, mobile number, and authentication identifiers.
- Profile data: name, date of birth, gender, photos, location, and the answers you choose to give to profile questions — including information about your faith and religious practice.
- Usage data: likes, passes, matches, messages, and in-app activity such as your last-active time.
- Technical data: IP address, device and browser type, and cookies or similar local storage used to keep you signed in and remember your language.
- Billing data: subscription status and transaction identifiers. Card details are handled by our payment provider and are never stored by us.
- Support data: the content of messages you send us through the contact form or by email.
3. Sensitive data
Information about your religious beliefs — and, by the nature of a dating service, your sexual orientation — is treated as a special category of personal data. We process it only because you have voluntarily and explicitly provided it in order to be matched with other members, and you may withdraw that consent at any time by editing or deleting your profile.
4. How we use your data
- To create and operate your account and show your profile to other members (performance of our contract with you).
- To recommend potential matches based on your preferences and location (performance of our contract).
- To deliver messages, notifications and service announcements (performance of our contract).
- To take payment and manage subscriptions (performance of our contract, legal obligation).
- To keep the Service safe: detecting fake profiles, spam, abuse and fraud, including via reCAPTCHA on public forms (legitimate interests).
- To improve the Service through aggregated, non-identifying analytics (legitimate interests).
- To comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests (legal obligation).
5. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data and we do not show third-party advertising. We share data only with service providers who process it on our instructions: our hosting and database provider (Supabase), our application host (Vercel), our transactional email provider (Resend), Google (Maps for location search and reCAPTCHA for spam protection) and our payment provider. Some of these providers operate outside your country; such transfers are covered by Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard. We may also disclose data where required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our members.
6. What other members can see
Your photos, first name, age, approximate location and the profile answers you complete are visible to other signed-in members. Your email address, phone number and exact coordinates are never shown. Please do not put contact details or anything you would not want a stranger to know into your public profile.
7. Retention
We keep your profile data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, photos, likes, matches and messages are removed from our live systems promptly; residual copies may persist in encrypted backups for a limited period before being overwritten. Records we must keep for legal, tax or fraud-prevention reasons are retained for the period required by law.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, to receive a portable copy, and to withdraw consent at any time. You can edit most data directly in the app and delete your account in one tap from Settings. For anything else, send us a message through our contact form. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
9. Security
Data is transmitted over TLS and stored on managed infrastructure with row-level access controls, so that members can only read the records they are entitled to. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and will notify you and the relevant authority of a personal-data breach where the law requires it.
10. Children
Orthodate is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us immediately and we will remove it.
11. Cookies and local storage
We use strictly necessary cookies and local storage to keep you signed in, remember your language choice, and protect our forms with reCAPTCHA. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
12. Changes and contact
We will post any changes to this policy on this page and, where the change is material, notify you in the app or by email. Questions? Reach us through our contact form.
